We had somehow forgotten how lovely Vancouver can be in April. The city is in full bloom and on sunny days it’s warm enough to sit on the beach with a wind jacket. From April 12-17 we were invited to create an interactive installation and a series of workshops for the Reel to Real Film Festival in Vancouver. We’d like to extend our thanks to the incredible team behind the festival, with special thanks to our amazing hosts Venay Felton and Tammy Bannister. A big thanks also to the talented Paul Bennett for the soundscape he created for this show, and to Sarah Van Borek for the videography.

Nuit Blanche 2013

Thanks to all who joined us for Nuit Blanche this year! We had a packed Museum and an incredibly imaginative installation that grew and changed all night long, with keen the participation of hundreds and hundreds!

The interactive sound and music composition for ”Suspended Narratives” was ingeniously conceived of by Christian Carriere and Navid Navab. Together they created a series of light responsive soundscapes that mesmerized the crowds.

Big thanks go to Jenny san Martin who created video and still projections incorporated into the piece.

Join us For Nuit Blanche

For Nuit Blanche 2013 we will be presenting Suspended Narratives :

A night of interactive shadow projections and sonic compositions created by Mere Phantoms, in collaboration with Christian Carriere and Navid Navab.

Inspired by iconic moments of change, growth, erasure, loss and disaster drawn from the McCord Museum archives, this interactive installation re-imagines historic moments of Montreal’s growth as a city. During Nuit Blanche, the audience will be invited to make paper cutouts of invented architecture, and to add them into a cumulative installation. To bring the installation alive, audience members will use mobile lights to activate soundscapes and animate three-dimensional shadows.

Suspended Narratives at the Royal BC Museum

On January 27 2013 we created an installation at The Royal BC Museum in Victoria BC. The First Peoples Gallery in the museum was a most extraordinary space for Mere Phantoms’ ‘Suspended Narratives’. Performance artist Peter Morin joined us for this event, adding deer-hide cut outs to the cumulative paper installation. A very special thank you to the totems who inhabit the gallery for sharing the space with us.

In January 2013 Mere Phantoms presented Suspended Narratives at the AGGV’s Family Sunday and Urbanite events. Hundreds came out to contribute to this cumulative interactive installation that reflects both artists and participants reflections on the experience of living in an increasingly urbanized worlds. This Friday, Feb 1st Mere Phantoms will be at the Victoria Art Gallery, providing the main visual component for URBANITE! We have created an interactive installation informed by the gallery’s latest exhibition, Traces: Fantasy Worlds and Tales of Truth, featuring works by Daniel Barrow, Alison Norlen and Ed Pien. Mere Phantoms has been invited to present interactive installations at the Royal BC Museum and at the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria!

Wonder Sunday: an event for children and their families.

Sunday January 27^th, 1 – 3pm at the Royal British Columbia Museum

Did you ever wonder how to make a story through the use of images and shadow? As the Museum celebrates National Literary Day, come and see how film and shadows can transform the First Peoples gallery into a space of stories and magic. For this family oriented event visitors will be invited to create paper cutouts that reflect their own relationship with the rapidly changing urban environment, and then cast their shadows onto the Museum walls. We are thrilled to have Victoria-based performance-artist Peter Morin collaborate with us on this installation.

URBANITE: an evening of adult programming throughout the gallery. Age 18+

Friday February 1^st, 8:00 – 11:00pm at the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria

Mere Phantoms has been invited to present an Interactive Shadow Installation in conjunction with TRACES: Fantasy Worlds and Tales of Truth, a contemporary drawing exhibition featuring work by Daniel Barrow, Alison Norlen and Ed Pien. All Hallows Eve… its shadows we weave

Here are some images from our interactive installation at St. James Church in Montreal, from saturday Octover 27th 2012. This event was organized by Ville Montreal Cultural Events. Families were invited to make paper cut outs which were added to the installation and then use the mobile lights to animate the shadow projections. A big thank you goes out to the organizers for inviting us and all the volunteers for making it an enchanting afternoon.
