Mere Phantoms was invited to create and present a new work as a part of a thematic exhibition called Afterlife at The Museum in Kitchener Ontario.
The exhibition was constructed around a particular piece of local history " A Séance Experience Featuring The Ghost of Thomas Lacey " a local Kitchener resident who became famous for his Seances he would hold in the 1960s. We decided to look at the 19th century history of occult practices to gain an understanding of how people manifested their grief and struggle with death in the form of adapted rituals, occult practices. What kinds of objects were used in an effort to understand death, communicate with ancestors, create spaces of contemplation?
We approached the theme by creating a space where the viewer was invited to contemplate a shadow interpretation of the rituals, practices and objects that were meant to help comprehend the fragility of life and the nature of death. The installation is titled Afterlife ; Dancing the Threshold.
Presented by The Museum Kitchener, Ontario Sept 19 2019 - Jan 12th 2020
